Daniel I've been looking for other Substackers who live in Latin America. Happy to have found you. I love airports for some reason. The anticipation of being in a brand new place in just a few hours has always been so exciting. Plus I love the thrill of takeoff.
Thanks for the comment Thomas! You’re based in MX? Yes, always fun to find writers based in a similar region. I’m not a fan of take-offs but landings are fun. Also when we get free snacks / drinks! I’m glad you also enjoy the feeling about to travel.
I love airports. Got it from my mom who, if given the choice of one layover or two, would always choose two. Or three. More flights for my money, she would claim.
I used to fly from Mexico to the USA a couple times a year for work which usually included at least one event presentation. I found that choosing a long layover helped me transition from my work in Mexico to what lay ahead.
US airports always feel so modern, there would always be something new and (for me) unexpected. Like the bathrooms with their foamy soap and hot water. Spend six months in Mexico traveling and you'll know what I mean.
I can relate! I’m down in Colombia and every time I go home it feels like I stepped into the future. So funny about your mom but she makes sense. It may be a slower journey but you get more bang for your buck. Thanks for reading and the thoughtful comment Brian!
Great post, Daniel. Iceland is the perfect place to mention at Christmastime. Their traditions and folklore of the Christmas trolls are so unique and inspiring of the imagination.
Have a wonderful Christmas and the best to you as you travel during 2025.
Thank you Lois! This tradition was a random discovery that seemed worth sharing. There’s a lot more to learn for sure. I hope you have a great Christmas and start to the New Year as well!
Good one, Daniel! I'd love to go to Tanzania, it just sounds so exotic. Also, re airports, I always like just getting there and knowing I am almost "there." I can relax in airports, after the usual mad dash from a hotel or home or wherever to get there. Have you been to Singapore yet? Their airport is the No. 1 in the world. With a botanical garden, waterfalls, orchid garden, movie theatre, yoga studio, showers, meditation rooms, tons of restaurants, truly innovative and beautiful, in 4 buildings -- and super high tech. We didn't see ANYONE as we left, no stamping of passports--just a machine, it was weird but cool.
Tanzania would be a fantastic trip. Wow this airport sounds like the best experience. I’ve flown Singapore Air but haven’t been to the airport (or country yet). It’s on my list though! I’m glad you share a similar feeling about airports! Thank you for the comment and reading Jeanine!
Loved Singapore for many reasons. It’s such a tale of awe in a modern world, the story of how Mr. Lee (their visionary) pulled the tip of that island from working - farming community, uneducated, to a first world nation whose ‘exports’ are financial services and riggings- equipment for water and oil production and electronics. And education is key, too. Mandatory free school, think up to 14 years, and the locals are conversational and good to talk to, lively discussions. The beauty of the massive trees and foliage and wide boulevards in some areas reminds me of Honolulu—same plants. The food- don’t get me started. You’ll have a blast. Plus super reasonable on the pocketbook.

And of course, the people watching!
Fun article!

I always feel relieved when I finally get to the airport. Like even though the flight may be late, I'm there at least. I love Singapore Air!
Singapore is on our list, knowing the airport is cool is another point in its favor!
